The latest technology, including electrified and fuel cell propulsion, automated driving, and mobility as a service (MaaS), will feature.

The company wants to help make Tokyo a global showcase for “mobility for all”.

“We want mobility to be a possibility, not an obstacle,” Toyota president Akio Toyoda says.

The product categories covered by the Toyota sponsorship are vehicles, mobility services and certain transportation and mobility support products (including robots).

It will demonstrate level four automation where the vehicle does all driving functions in-defined areas in the Tokyo Water Front City and Haneda areas.

The “Toyota Concept-i”, a car that recognises drivers’ emotions and preferences and can make conversation using artificial intelligence (AI), will also be on show.

Transportation services for athletes and affiliated guests around the athlete’s village will be provided with e-Palette, the next generation battery electric vehicle (BEV) designed for MaaS, while WelCab assistive vehicles and new personal mobility devices support last-mile needs.

The latter includes a standing-riding device for staff such as security officers.

Toyota expects its new LPG hybrid JPN Taxi, introduced in October 2017, will be popular around Tokyo to welcome visitors from around the world, including those using wheelchairs.

More than 3000 passenger vehicles will be provided for official use and others, equipped with the latest environmental and safety technologies, including hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) like the Mirai sedan and fuel cell bus Sora, plus fuel cell forklifts.

The latest HEV, PHEV and BEV cars from Toyota and Lexus comprise the rest of the fleet.

About 15 million visitors are expected to join Tokyo’s 15 million citizens during the Games.

Toyota became the official worldwide mobility partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Committees in 2015 for the 2017-2024 period.
