Tesla sets official opening for Semi factory

Tesla will officially open its dedicated Semi truck factory in Nevada on September 24, around five months after high-volume production of the electric heavy-duty truck began at the site.

The 150,000 square metre factory is located next to Tesla’s Gigafactory Nevada and has capacity to produce up to 50,000 Semis annually.

The first truck rolled off the high-volume production line in April, marking a step toward large-scale manufacturing of the electric heavy vehicle.

Tesla produces the Semi in two versions, with the Standard Range model rated for 325 miles (around 520km) and the Long Range version offering 500 miles (around 800km).

Both use an 800kW three-motor powertrain producing more than 1000hp, according to Tesla. Its Megacharger system can recharge the trucks to around 70% in about 30 minutes.

US pricing is around US$260,000 for the Standard Range model and US$290,000 for the Long Range version.

Despite the Nevada plant’s potential output, analysts expect Tesla to deliver between 5000 and 15,000 Semis this year.

The Semi was first unveiled in 2017 but only entered volume production this year following a series of delays.

Tesla is also preparing to expand the truck into Europe, with pricing, range and availability details expected to be announced at the IAA Transportation show in Hannover, Germany, from September 15 to 20.
