Toyota New Zealand has committed to fixing all of the vehicles it has sold in the last five years – some 25,000 of them – that may be afflicted by issues with their Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF system).
Announced last night at the media launch of the updated Hilux, the selected Hilux, Fortuner and Prado owners will be offered the repair.
Issues with the DPF system, in a small number of cases and generally in warmer environments, can cause the vehicle to emit smoke.
It can be exacerbated by a vehicle being driven only in stop-start conditions with no chance to ‘burn off’ the system.
The fix involves replacing the catalyst, updating the fifth injector and software changes.
Toyota general manager of after sales Spencer Morris says only around 10% of owners experience an issue.
“We never give up on customer problems,” Morris notes. “We are always relentlessly trying to make sure we have happy customers.”
A fleet of five utes are being made available around the country for owners to use while their vehicles are off the road being rectified.
