The Port of Auckland has activated its first large-scale solar energy system, marking a milestone in its move toward electrification and lower emissions.

“The solar panels on the roof of our multi-level car handling facility at Bledisloe Wharf are now operational,” the port says.

The 1,344-panel array was activated in June and is now the largest solar installation in Auckland’s CBD. It is expected to generate around 876 megawatt hours of electricity annually — enough to power about 100 homes, or roughly 6% of the port’s current energy use.

“It’s a major milestone in our push to reduce emissions and strengthen the resilience of our power network,” the port says.

“As ports around the world transition to low-carbon futures, this is a significant step towards our own electrification goals.”

Additional solar installations are already in the pipeline, with plans to equip the roof of the Fergusson Wharf main building as part of its upcoming refurbishment.
