The market for used heavy trucks is recovering, albeit very slowly.

Some 41 used trucks over 3.5 tonnes were imported in January, compared with 222 new trucks – the best figure for used imports in some time.

Six years ago, 3275 used heavy trucks arrived in New Zealand. This figure plummeted each year to only 158 in 2010 before improving slightly to 231used heavy truck arrivals in 2011.

Light truck arrivals, however, were heavily in favour of new vehicles in January, with 754 new light commercials (under 3.5 tonnes) being landed – against only 77 used import commercials of the same size..

The UK is proving to be a growing source of used commercial vehicles – with 17 used commercials (trucks and vans) arriving from Britain last month, compared with 82 from Japan.
