Dust problems created by logging trucks in the Far North are being tackled by a new funding agreement.
The NZ Transport Agency has accepted a Far North District Council request to reallocate money to seal sections of Ngapipito and Pipiwai roads north of Whangarei, Voxy reports.
Residents in the area have been dealing with high levels of road dust over the years due to an increase in logging activity.
The work will see just over 6km of road sealed and will be complete by April 2018.
Council’s operations committee chairperson Ann Court says it’s a “great result for families living along these roads who are dealing with unacceptable levels of dust”.
“I am happy that they will begin experiencing significantly improved conditions before the summer is over,” she says.
NZTA has also agreed to improve more than 40km of unsealed roads with dust reduction measures, Voxy reports.
Laying geotextiles to strengthen road edges, improving culverts and drainage are among some of the solutions.
