Two separate incidents have caused major disruptions on Wellington roads.

A Mainfreight truck carrying hazardous materials rolled on State Highway 1 north of Wellington, Plimmerton to Paekākāriki, early Friday morning, October 19. This blocked the road which is expected to remain closed for most of the afternoon.

The detour is via Paekākāriki Hill Rd but this road is only suitable for light vehicles only. Heavy vehicles have been asked to avoid the area.

Many trucks carrying freight bound for the South Island on Cook Strait ferries are stuck in a traffic backlog up to 20 kilometres long, Stuff reports.

Meanwhile, a breakdown on SH2 at Remutaka Hill just before midday also blocked the area which was reopened just before 1pm.

NZ Transport Agency will release further updates throughout the day.
