EROAD is highlighting the devastating effects speed has in head-on collisions through video footage of its car crane drop demonstration.
The display took place at the transport and telematics technology firm’s annual Fleet Day event at Hamilton’s Mystery Creek on August 7. EROAD shared the striking video in a recent LinkedIn post.
Two vehicles were dropped from heights of 30 metres and 60 metres to simulate crashes at 80km/h and 120km/h. The drop was carefully engineered alongside safety specialists, with all attendees remaining at a safe distance.
The driver’s area in the 80km/h car was largely untouched, while the impact of 120km/h bought the steering wheel forward to within about 10cm of the driver’s headrest —”a stark reminder of the life-saving importance of managing speed,” EROAD says.
The demonstration followed a presentation from North Western Waikato road policing supervisor Steven Jones who spoke about road safety in his presentation, ‘The anatomy of a serious accident – causes and prevention’.
The key message was that speed is the difference between walking away, or not.
