Wage growth slow except in construction

Statistics New Zealand’s labour cost index recorded an increase in the private sector for the past year of 2.1%, compared to the construction sector, which was 4.7%   nationwide – and an unsurprising 7% in Christchurch, indicating that the Christchurch rebuild will be driving much of the construction industry for the foreseeable future.

This is also shown by a large number of construction and building jobs open in the region.

This will be especially evident when the Central Christchurch Development Unit (CCDU), a division of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, selects the winning bidder of the central city reconstruction, with building expected to begin later this month.
