VTNZ boss to step down

VTNZ’s long-serving country manager Greg O’Connor has resigned after nearly 30 years with the company.

The vehicle testing firm says the decision is not linked to the alleged driving test cash bribes currently under investigation at its Highbrook branch, Stuff reports.

O’Connor has been with Vehicle Testing New Zealand (VTNZ) for almost 30 years, including more than seven years in his current role.

A VTNZ spokesperson told Stuff O’Connor signalled his retirement to the board in September and it was communicated to staff on October 7.

“His resignation was long planned and is in no way connected to the events at the Highbrook branch,” the spokesperson said.

“VTNZ employs more than 1000 people. The vast majority are honest and committed to keeping our roads and travellers safe. Like any large organisation, employment issues are an occasional reality for management.

“Greg has spent close to 30 years with VTNZ and has overseen many of its achievements and growth in that time. Greg will be leaving VTNZ at the end of January 2026 to allow for a smooth transition to his successor.

“The delivery of VTNZ’s services to thousands of New Zealanders every day is unaffected by Greg’s resignation.”
