South Westland’s Waiho Bailey bridge has reopened only 18 days after it was destroyed in flooding.

Widespread infrastructure damage was felt across the region after torrential rain on March 26.

Thanks to a team of workers including NZ Army engineers and contractors from Downer, the bridge was back in operation on April 13.

Last steps saw the bridge jacked, rocking rollers removed, new permanent bearings installed, and the whole structure safely fastened in place.

After the bridge was open to traffic, there was still more work to do with sealing the approaches, reinstating the guardrail and work on the pedestrian walkway.
