The branch president of the Maritime Union is the latest to die in an
incident at the port of Lyttleton.
The union issued a statement this morning saying it was greatly
saddened by the death of Brad Fletcher yesterday. It is understood
Fletcher was driving a scissor lift that fell over.
Maritime Union national secretary Joe Fleetwood says the death of Brad
Fletcher was a great shock.
³Brad was a highly respected figure in Lyttelton and within the
Maritime Union, and the Union would be supporting his workmates and
family.²
Lyttleton Port Company chief executive Peter Davie also expressed
sympathy.
³All staff at LPC are deeply distressed by what has occurred and our
thoughts are with the family and friends at this time,² says Davie.
³This tragic accident deeply affects everyone in our Port community. We
are focused on providing support services to the family and colleagues
to help wherever possible.²
The death is the the third for the port this year.
The NZ Police and WorkSafe New Zealand are investigating the accident.
