The driver of a car which crossed the centre line into the path of an oncoming truck, has died following a crash on SH1, north of Kaikoura about 8.30pm yesterday.
Police say the driver of the truck took evasive action and drove off the road in an attempt to avoid the collision.
The driver of the car, an elderly Blenheim man, died at the scene.
The driver of the truck – which was impaled on a fence – was shaken, but uninjured in the crash, which happened near the intersection with Kiwa Road at Hapuku.
