A Palmerston North truck driver helped to extinguish a car fire that could have ignited a nearby church.
According to Stuff, a fire occurred in the car park of the House of Breakthrough Church at 5.40am on Wednesday and was spotted by a passing female truck driver.
Palmerston North Fire Brigade, senior station officer Ian King, told Stuff the lady stopped and used the fire extinguisher from her truck.
“It certainly had the potential to ignite the building if she hadn’t been driving past. It was very lucky,” says King.
A nearby resident also helped by using a hose from the church.
King says they are treating the fire as a suspicious one.
“Cars don’t just burst into flames in the middle of the night,” he says.
King told Stuff the fire was only smoldering by the time fire crews arrived on the scene, and he praised the efforts of the truck driver and resident.
“They did good work,” he says.
King told Stuff they were both treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
