Mersi has led MoT for nearly six years and was previously chief executive of Land Information New Zealand, and acting secretary for Internal Affairs. Prior his chief executive roles he was also deputy commissioner at Inland Revenue and was a deputy secretary at the Treasury for seven years.

“During my time at the ministry I have been immensely proud of the professionalism and effort shown by everyone here,” Mersi says.

“It is only through their commitment and teamwork that we have been able to achieve so much during often disruptive periods.

“I am confident the entire Te Manatū Waka whānau have the drive and expertise to continue to deliver for New Zealand, and I wish them every success for the future,” he says.

Deputy Public Service Commissioner Helene Quilter says Mersi has a proven record of enhancing organisational performance.

He has provided critical system leadership as a member of the Economic Chief Executives Group, the Strategic Planning Reform Board, the COVID-19 Chief Executives Board, the Border Executive Board and the Climate Change Chief Executives Board.

“Mr Mersi is a highly respected leader with extensive experience in the Public Service. He has breadth and depth of policy and delivery leadership experience, including as a chief executive for the last 11 years.

“His strong and proven system and organisational leadership will equip him well for the commissioner, Inland Revenue role,” Quilter says.
