Toll proposed for Transmission Gully

The Transmission Gully motorway could be user-pays once up and running.

A NZ Transport Agency briefing document to transport minister Phil Twyford recommends making the 27 kilometre four-lane motorway from Mackays Crossing to Linden a toll route.

The document, released to Stuff.co.nz under the Official Information Act, says the new motorway will reduce the cost of road travel and doesn’t encourage the use of public transport such as rail.

“Tolls could counter the perceived cost reductions of travelling by road.

“Tolling gets people used to paying as they travel, and paying extra for certain benefits,” the document says.

Twyford told Stuff he will support an investigation into a toll for the network.

The $850 million project is now past the halfway mark and on track for its 2020 opening.
