More than 140 matches were made between secondary school students and employers at the latest Auckland SpeedMeet event.
The event saw students who are interested in getting into a trade like the automotive industry and potential employers coming together speed-dating style, for short six-minute mini-interviews.
Job opportunities could then be secured once the matches were made.
SpeedMeet is part of the Got a Trade? Got it Made! collaboration which aims to raise awareness of careers in the trades and services industries for 16-24 year olds.
There is a shortage of employees in a wide range of trades and services industries, especially in Auckland, MITO’s event organiser Rachael Dippie says.
“We were thrilled with how the day went,” she says.
“We had more secondary school students attend than we expected – a great sign that our message of how rewarding a career in the trades can be is getting through.”
Kim Milne, general manager of human resources for AB Equipment and NZ Trucks says the company came away with several matches for a new heavy machinery technician, which were being looked into.
SpeedMeet will return next year as part of the 2017 Got a Trade? Got it Made! campaign.
