A covert speed trap set up by the Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit (CVIU) in Gisborne has caught 100 heavy vehicles speeding in just two days, 98 of which were logging trucks.

Senior Sergeant Phil Critchley, acting manager for the Gisborne CVIU, says the results are alarming, with several trucks caught speeding multiple times, and one that was caught five times in just two days.

The highest recorded speed was 118km/h in an area with a speed limit of 90km/h on State Highway 35 north of Gisborne, through Tolaga and Tokomaru bays.

Most were caught traveling between 100km/h and 108km/h.

Critchley says the figures were alarming and should be a huge concern for both the transport industry, trucking companies, and drivers alike.

He adds that police identified several companies that were the ‘worst offenders’ – and would be in contact with all of the operators, with infringement notices expected to be issued to all drivers.
