The Southland District Council is making plans for how the region will better deal with high productivity motor vehicles (HPMV) – saying an increase in their use is inevitable.

Currently HPMV operators must seek a permit to travel on the region’s roads.

The council agreed to rewrite its policy at a meeting last week.
So far Southland has issued permits for 89 HPMV vehicles, but only on 4.2km of sealed and 3.6Km of unsealed roads.

It has turned down 75 applications.
