Site managers, civil and structural engineers in high demand

A recruitment company report says that demand will be high in 2017 for site managers as well as civil engineers and structural engineers, as infrastructure projects get under way.

The Hays Quarterly Report covering the January to March 2017 period says that senior and intermediate civil and structural engineers are required for new build design and alteration, the strengthening of buildings, land development, water and transport design projects and large infrastructure projects.

Following the Kaikoura earthquake in November 2016, demand is also rising for site managers, senior quantity surveyors, project managers, forepersons, tradespeople and skilled labour with seismic strengthening experience.

To meet staffing needs, employers are looking across the country for people who can relocate permanently or temporarily.

The report also says the job market will remain active, although that comes with its challenges.

“Increased job vacancy activity in late 2016 was positive news for candidates, but it led to a fall in the number of available highly-skilled candidates,” says Hays New Zealand managing director Jason Walker.

“This continues with employers, particularly those in the industrial and construction sectors, looking for new staff,” says Walker.
