The NZ Transport Agency advises that from Monday September 5 motorists travelling on State Highway 3, Manawatu Gorge, may experience short delays while routine bridge maintenance is carried out.
NZ Transport Agency highway manager Ross I’Anson says the agency has put in measures to minimise disruption as the gorge is an important route for people and freight.
He adds that due to the nature of the work it was not possible to do it at night.
Therefore, a small section of the gorge will operate as a single lane controlled by temporary traffic lights between 9am and 4pm. At these times motorists can expect delays of around 5-10 minutes.
Between 4pm and 9am, the Gorge will be open to two lanes, accompanied by a temporary speed limit of 30km/h at the work site.
“Our crews will be working on nine bridge sites over an around 2km stretch of the gorge, working on one bridge at time. Much of the maintenance work is taking place under the bridges, so crews won’t necessarily be visible from the road,” says Ross I’Anson.
The work is anticipated to take three months, weather dependent.
A status update is available on the agency’s website and social media channels. For further information visit nzta.govt.nz, or call 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49).
