The minister of transport has today told media it could take several months to get SH1 back up and running again – and that a quick patch job was not planned.
“Obviously SH1 from Seddon through to Cheviot is in an incredibly bad way,” Simon Bridges says. “There are several slips there, and you have got roading that has literally been moved; very serious issues there.”
“We are clearly talking about several months to get that back in an a position where we have State Highway One all the way back down that coast,” he says, explaining it is important to the country that the road is functional.
The plan is to do the job properly.
“We want to do a really good job of that, it is not just going to be a case of fixing that up with emergency works,” he explains. “That would just be leaving ourselves open to seeing this again.”
