The Ports of Auckland should be split in two and the operating company sold off, prominent councillor Christine Fletcher says.
The former Auckland mayor and National MP wants the port’s future to be included in public consultation of Auckland Council’s long-term plan and 10-year budget, NBR reports.
She supports keeping the land it occupies in public ownership but wants the operating business sold. “The business of the port is another matter and I know many small Auckland investors would welcome an opportunity to invest in their port.
“This could provide fresh investment, creating a better platform for efficiency and competition.
“The port is looking to the future and so too must the council.“
However, mayor Phil Goff has dismissed Fletcher’s plea.
