Scania’s new generation of trucks, including a gas-filled model, are making their mark in the local market.
Leading the charge at the Brisbane Truck Show was the new 650 hp V8 Euro 6 engine fitted in an R-series prime mover, complete with 3300 Nm of torque, ideally suited to long-haulage work.
There were two G 500 6-cylinder Euro 6 prime movers on the stand: one in road freight set-up for inter-state high cubic capacity B-double work, and the second for construction duties complete with a tipper body.
Also, on show was a P 340 Euro 6, 6×2 gas-fuelled rigid truck, a specification seen for the first time in Australia. The vehicle carries twin large-capacity compressed natural gas tanks, and can offer vastly reduced CO2 emissions, making it ideal for operations in densely-populated urban delivery environments.
All the vehicles on the stand met Euro 6 standards which currently accounts for 90% of deliveries in Australia. Scania says this highlights customer demand to play a role in reducing air pollution.
The vehicles were all fitted with side curtain roll-over airbags providing the highest level of crash protection available for driver and passenger.
Scania is also highlighting its in-built telematics system, electrically operated cab tilt function and automated gear change with driver-selectable operating modes.
LED head and taillamps, advanced emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and electronic stability programme also provide customers with the latest in driver technology.
Scania Trucks Australia sales director Dean Dal Santo says the Bisbane Truck Show was the first opportunity to display to the market comprehensive array of new generation trucks.
“We have seen a marked increase in interest and orders since we debuted the NTG range in Australia just one year ago.
“This show gives the industry and general public the opportunity to see exactly how the latest technology in truck transport can benefit their lives and businesses. Our sale volume is up almost 55% YTD, and we took 9.1% of the heavy-duty market in April, with 7.7% YTD market share, a rise of 3%.
“Our focus on business sustainability illustrates just how adding Scania trucks to a company fleet can drive down total operating costs, improve uptime and profitability,” Dal Santo says.

“With 4700 Scania vehicles in Australia using our Scania telematics system, we are able to analyse and demonstrate, week-by-week, how Scania’s solutions can save businesses significant amounts of money, which makes them financially stronger, better employers, securing jobs for Australians in the industry.
“Displaying all our trucks as Euro 6 compliant illustrates how Scania is leading the shift towards a sustainable transport system for Australia.
“Many of our customers, and our customers’ customers are now demanding a smaller carbon footprint from transport logistics in order to meet their own environmental targets, and Scania is fully equipped to deliver on this need.
“We look forward to discussing our pathways towards Total Operating Economy and a smaller carbon footprint with all businesses interested in reducing their operating costs and boosting their profitability,” he says.
