The NZ Transport Agency is set to improve safety and resilience on two sections of State Highway 1 on either side of Warkworth.
A new guardrail is being installed on State Highway 1 near Schollum Access Rd and the road is being widened to help prevent vehicles hitting the bank and rolling between Puhoi and Warkworth, says the agency.
Road crews will begin work on September 26 and the work is expected to take approximately four weeks.
Other scheduled improvements include the removal of potholes to make the road more resilient further north through the Dome Valley. This work should commence on October 2 for a five-week period dependent on the weather.
Most of the work will be carried out at night between 6.30pm and 6am to minimise the impact on road users, some will take place during the day to ensure the repaired road surface isn’t damaged by passing traffic and some over weekends. However, in the event that weather induced work delays take place, work will be put on hold over the Labour Day weekend.
The agency’s Northland safety and performance Manager Tim Crow points out that last year the agency did work to improve drainage and thereby ensure ground conditions are more durable for the repair of the road surface. “The drier and warmer weather means conditions are ideal to return to these sites to complete the work we started, so you’ll start to see more of our road crews getting stuck in across Northland’s state highways.”
