RTF in discussion with MoT on essential services

The Road Transport Forum (RTF) is working with the Ministry of Transport to clarify essential services within the road freight industry.

RTF chief executive Nick Leggett says services such as tyres and parts is an important component of the transport industry but this hasn’t been confirmed as an essential service just yet.

“What we need now are some specifics about what is essential service and what isn’t, so we’re chasing up with the Ministry of Transport directly on this to squeeze that detail out … We really need this clarified from the horse’s mouth.

“The information out to date is quite broad and trucking is an industry that plays a really important role in the economy.”

In the current situation, the rules and legislation might not be that clear so the Government might need to come up with some new rules “which is difficult”, Leggett says.

“The Government are doing the best they can with what they’ve got,” he says.
