Calls are being made to fast-track construction of a roundabout to Gisborne’s port entrance due to traffic safety concerns.

East Coast MP Anne Tolley is putting pressure on regional development minister Shane Jones to make roading improvements leading into Eastland Port, the Gisborne Herald reports.

The roundabout will cost around $2 million and Tolley would like work to start with spending from the Government’s $1 billion regional development fund.
“It would be a small project with huge impact on both residents and our busy productive port,” she says.

The project is considered urgent due to the number of trucks turning into the Hirini Street intersection causing issues for other road users.
More than 120,000 trucks enter the port every year.
