A Rail Safety Week campaign to remind people to cross railway level crossings carefully following an increase in incidents was launched by transport minister Simon Bridges at Wellington Railway Station yesterday.
KiwiRail chief executive Peter Reidy points out that at times people cross the tracks after a train has passed but while the alarms are still operating without realising another train is coming from another direction. Complacency and distractions like cellphones and headphones are also seen as causes for incidents.
Reidy adds that the company released a video clip filmed at the Epuni pedestrian crossing in Lower Hutt, Wellington, via TrackSAFE’s social media platforms to encourage pedestrians to change their approach at level crossings.
The campaign is coordinated by KiwiRail in partnership with TrackSAFE NZ, the Transport Agency, NZ Police, Auckland Transport, Transdev Auckland, Greater Wellington Regional Council and Transdev Wellington.
