Resource consent has been given for a $30 million construction project at Timaru’s PrimePort.
Environment Canterbury has given the green light for six bulk fuel storage tanks and pipeline at the facility, the Timaru Herald reports.
The tanks will hold up to 44-million litres of fuel.
The new terminal, including bunding, fire protection systems, control systems and truck load-out facilities, will be operated by Timaru Oil Services Limited.
Prime Port chief executive Phil Melhopt told the Timaru Herald it’s a major investment for the region.
“We are looking forward to welcoming Timaru Oil Services to our facilities, this investment underlines the strategic importance of Timaru as a major freight and logistics hub for the whole South Island.”
Australian Securities Exchange listed engineering company LogiCamms has secured the contract to carry out the work.
LogiCamms chief executive Flora Furness says it will be a “flagship project”.
“Timaru bulk fuel terminal will be the only new complete terminal built in New Zealand over the past decade,” Furness says.
The new terminal is expected to be operational around mid-2019.
