Strike action at South Port has been called off following a settlement between the port and union members.
Workers at the NZX-listed Bluff port company were planning to walk off the job for 48 hours on Wednesday, January 31, but last minute negotiations yesterday resulted in a positive outcome.
Maritime Union of NZ national secretary Craig Harrison says a compromise was reached with the employer around wage increases and other outstanding issues, and will be taken back to the union membership for ratification.
South Port chief executive Nigel Gear says the result in the best interests of everyone including the company, customers, and staff.
“The company and union held positive discussions today, and the settlement is a good outcome for all parties concerned.
“We will continue to work collaboratively to ensure we operate safely and efficiently to deliver a quality service,” Gear says.
