Port of Tauranga has received conditional approval for its Stella Passage development, with a fast-track expert panel proposing to grant all approvals sought for the major expansion.
The draft decision covers plans to extend the Sulphur Point container berth by 385 metres in two stages and the Mount Maunganui wharves by 315m.
The project would convert existing cargo storage land within the port’s current footprint and includes reclamation behind the new wharves and dredging of Stella Passage.
Port of Tauranga was given two days to comment on the proposed conditions, while other parties also have an opportunity to respond before a final decision is expected in early September.
Port of Tauranga chief executive Leonard Sampson says the draft decision is welcome as the port is currently operating at capacity.
“This development is vital for the regional and national economy and is urgently needed as we are currently at capacity,” Sampson says.
“The Stella Passage development will bring widespread economic benefits, reduce costs for importers and exporters and unlock decarbonisation opportunities. We will work with our advisory team to respond to the proposed conditions within the panel’s deadline.”
