Moving the Port of Auckland away from inner city could cost $5.5 billion according to a report due to be released tomorrow.
But a new site will be needed, and other regions ports could not take up the slack.
Those are the key findings of the Port Future Study, of which the NZ Herald has obtained a copy, and released some of the findings today.
It concludes the need to move is a given, and that Tauranga’s port and Whangarei’s Northport could not cope with taking on Auckland’s load, as well as the growing needs of their own regions.
It has also narrowed options for a new port down to the Firth of Thames and the Manukau Harbour.
The Port Future Study group is made of of representatives of the port, community groups, iwi and council.
