The New Zealand Transport Agency has hit back on what it deems misleading and inaccurate statements that suggest it is only focused on a road solution for a future tunnel across Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour.
The agency is currently endeavouring to protect the required land via a notice of requirement so that the land is at hand when a future crossing is needed. It emphasises that this action is not intended to finalise the form and detail of the project.
Currently, in conjunction with Auckland Transport, it is investigating which modes of rapid transit will best service the city’s future roading requirements. This information will feed into the additional Waitematā Harbour crossing project and ensure the protected route enables – and is fully integrated with – a future public transport network.
“We are 100% committed to providing Aucklanders with a multimodal transport corridor that would work in conjunction with the Auckland Harbour Bridge,” says the agency’s regional director Ernst Zöllner.
