The company hit the headlines this week and issued a recall notice over 23,000 vehicles it has already sold on the Australian market, after Australian Customs and Border Protection officers found the cancer-causing substance in spare parts.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says it is monitoring the recall and has asked the importer, Ateco Automotive, to replace affected components in the cars.

Dealers are also being asked to stop selling the affected cars.

Production has been halted while the issue is sorted, and the items replaced on new vehicles, but for those on the road, the parts will stay in place.

“After extensive consultations with the relevant state and federal government authorities, and in line with professional advice, vehicles fitted with these gaskets will remain so until normal in-service replacement is necessary,” the company says in the their notice to owners.

“This is consistent with approved procedures for vehicles manufactured prior to December 2003.

“However, if you have any concerns regarding the presence of affected gaskets in your vehicle please do not hesitate to contact our customer service department on 1800 114672 to arrange for the replacement of the affected gaskets.”

The company has already prepared procedures for workshop staff to ensure the items are handled correctly.
