UD Trucks New Zealand general manager Zane Erwee says Pelosi distinguished himself through his knowledge, professionalism and commitment.

“Sam stood out among the finalists through the final round, demonstrating exceptional knowledge, professionalism and commitment to going the extra mile.

“We could not be prouder to have him represent us in the global final,” Erwee says.

Pelosi has worked as a professional driver for 12 years and currently operates a UD Quon 11-litre crane truck for McLeod Hiabs, part of McLeod Group.

McLeod Hiabs general manager Phil Hutchinson says the achievement recognises the qualities Pelosi demonstrates on the road and at customer sites.

“Sam is humble, dependable and never seeks attention or recognition. He simply turns up, supports his workmates and performs at an exceptionally high standard day after day.

“Whatever the result, he has already made McLeod and his workmates extremely proud. We know Sam will represent UD Trucks New Zealand with skill, humility and professionalism,” Hutchinson says.

Pelosi says he approached the competition as he would any working day.

“I focused on safety, preparation, efficiency and always aiming to complete the job to the best of my ability.

“I will give it my best and hopefully make everyone proud,” he says.

Pelosi will travel to Ageo, Japan, at the end of October for the global final, where national champions will complete challenges based on real-world transport operations.

Competitors will be assessed on vehicle inspections and pre-drive checks, safe and fuel-efficient driving, manoeuvring, parking and overall performance.

Established in 2014, the UD Extra Mile Challenge is a global competition recognising professional truck drivers’ skills, knowledge and operating standards.
