New Zealand’s largest road freight survey in a decade has been launched, aiming to identify the key issues facing transport operators and industry stakeholders.

The 2025 National Road Freight Survey, organised by road freight body Transporting New Zealand, is now live and open for responses.

Conducted by independent surveying firm Research New Zealand, the survey is designed to gather feedback from all parts of the freight sector to help shape policy and regulation.

Transporting New Zealand chief executive Dom Kalasih says the survey is an opportunity for industry participants to share their views.

“There are over 30,000 people working in the road freight sector across more than 5,000 business entities, carrying 93% of the national freight task,” he says.

“We want to get a clearer picture of what their leading concerns are, what opportunities they see for improvement, and what might be lesser priorities.”

Key issues on the table include staff shortages, operating conditions, tolling and congestion charges, Cook Strait ferry services plus road policing and enforcement.

“If it is important to the people in the industry, we want to hear about it,” Kalasih says.

The survey is open to all transport operators, regardless of company size or industry association membership. It is also supported by the New Zealand Heavy Haulage Association and Groundspread NZ.

Heavy Haulage chief executive Jonathan Bhana-Thomson called it a “great initiative”, saying he expects strong participation and valuable industry feedback.

Groundspread NZ executive officer Rose Hyslop says she’s also looking forward to seeing the results shared across the transport and freight sectors.

Kalasih emphasised that the survey is short, multi-choice, and easy to complete, with an option for more detailed feedback.

“We’ve also thrown in a $500 travel voucher from the House of Travel for one lucky person to win. Just as a bit of a sweetener.”
