The December quarter saw a 0.2% increase on September 2018, which equates to $0.9 million.

However, for the month of December there was a $1.5 million or 0.8% drop in motor vehicle spending, compared with November 2018.

Spending on fuel also dropped $50 million in the December quarter, due to see-sawing fuel prices.

“The fall in the fuel industry coincided with petrol prices falling from record highs,” retail statistics manager Sue Chapman says.

“By the end of the December quarter, petrol prices had come down nearly 40 cents a litre.”

Overall results show actual retail spending using electronic cards was $18 billion in the December quarter, up $616 million (3.5%) from the December 2017 quarter.
