The brand will offer a seven model range of Maxus V80 multipurpose vans, to be distributed by the White Motor Company (WMC), which is also adding a pair of vans to their JAC offerings, which currently stand at three truck models.

The introduction here will mirror that of WMC Australia.

The deal for both markets was brokered simultaneously by WMC group CEO Jason Pecotic.

“I’m a Kiwi myself , so whenever I get involved with things in China, I’ve got New Zealand in my mind too. You’ll get the same models and release times.

“Homologation and Australian Design Rule (ADR) approval will take place in August; manufacturing will begin in September; market release will be in October and November.”

SAIC’s Maxus V80 vans are based on the former Leyland LDV front drive platform, powered by  a 2.5 litre common rail turbo diesel engine from Italian based VM Motori, outputting 100kW and 330Nm. Transmission options see a five-speed manual or an optional Allison automatic.

Three cargo variants will include a short and long-wheelbased model with standard roof heights, as well as a high-roof variant for the long wheelbase. Load capacity will be between 9 and 14 cubic metros, with a payload of up to 1.8 tones.

Four passenger variants will include an 11-seater short wheelbase with standard roof; a 15-seater long wheelbase in either standard or high roof configuration; and an 11-passenger long wheelbase luxury model.

With the JAC vans, the Sunray model uses JAC’s own 2.7 litre common rail turbo diesel, outputting 88Kw and 280Nm and coupled with either a five speed manual, or automatic. An optional Cummins ISF 2.8 litre turbo diesel will output 110kW and 360Nm. The cargo variant has a 14 cubic metre load capacity, while a mini-bus/people mover model can seat up to 15 people in either standard or luxury variants.

The smaller JAC Refine van uses a 2.0 litre turbo petrol unit, outputting 120Kw and 235Nm, coupled with a six speed manual. A diesel and automatic version is expected to be introduced as part of the line up.

Pecotic says: “The Maxus range will go head to head with some established brands, but will offer more creature comforts as standard and a strong European feel.

“They also represent a real challenger in the upper end of the people mover MPV market where they represent real value and serious alternative to Japanese and European models.

“It is a very exciting time for WMC and for the entire commercial vehicle market and the new Maxus range is going to really excite the market.

“The Maxus vehicles will also come with a high level of standard features which are not available or are options on other brands, which supports the high level of build quality, design and positioning of the Maxus product.”

JAC Motors (Jianghuai Automobile Co) is China’s ninth largest manufacturer, and produced over 466,800 vehicles in 2011.

SAIC produced 3.64 million vehicles in 2011.
