Minister wrong on ute detail

Transport Minister Michael Wood has muddied the waters on what electric utes will be coming to New Zealand with what was very likely a mistake in parliament yesterday.

During questions from National transport spokesperson Michael Woodhouse, Wood said the Prime Minister was correct to state that an electric LDV ute was coming to New Zealand.

But despite reinforcing that his answer was ‘on the public record’, he got it wrong.

“I can confirm that on public record, both LDV and the sector have confirmed that LDV’s intention is to bring such a hybrid vehicle on to the New Zealand market in the next 12 to 24 months, and that a range of other importers are working very hard to do the same.”

A hybrid, not a BEV.

Great Lake Motor Distributors general manager Andrew Baylis says they have no plan to bring a hybrid vehicle to market.

“We have no intention to bring in a hybrid ute because we don’t make one. But full BEV, yes.”
