Tauranga-based stevedoring company C3 Limited is set to close its Auckland operations resulting in more that 100 job losses.
A Maritime Union of New Zealand (MUNZ) spokesman said C3 management told workers about the move at a meeting on Wednesday, NZ Herald reports.
Around 115 employees, including casual staff, have reportedly been made redundant, with around 70 of them being MUNZ members.
The last day of operation is expected to be September 20, NZ Herald reports.
C3 is part of the Linx Cargo Care Group headquartered in Sydney and handles vehicles and general cargo on the port.
It operates across 23 locations in New Zealand and Australia and employ more than 1400 people, according to its website.
C3’s closure in Auckland would leave Wallace Investments Limited as the major third-party stevedoring company at Port of Auckland.
Port spokesperson Julie Wagener says C3 has played an important role at Auckland’s port for a number of years.
“A decision like this is never easy. We understand that a number of C3 workers will likely work for Wallace Investments. Wallace Investments are the largest third-party stevedoring company working at the port but there are other small specialised stevedoring operators.
“We welcome those with relevant skills to apply for roles at Port of Auckland through our normal recruitment process.
“The port is not expecting there to be any significant issues for customers when it comes to loading or unloading cargo or roll-on roll-off vehicles such as cars,” Wagener says.
