Nelson-based New Zealand Forestland is calling for feedback about its plans to use forestry trucks on private land around Port Underwood.

At a meeting open to the public last week, Forestland’s  Angus Malcolm, said the company planned to buy land at Whataroa Forest and use public roads to cart the logs.

In an application to the Marlborough District Council, the company said the traffic would be a continuation of current levels – around 10 lugging trucks a day.

The company has said it would use a barge to transport logs to Shakespeare Bay for export whenever possible, and would run trucks on the roads only between 7am and 5pm.

Harvesting of the forest could take between two and five years. Replanting was likely to follow.
