New and used light commercial and truck arrivals remained strong in March 2017.

New light commercial (under 3500kg GVM) arrivals of 3299 units were the highest number recorded so far, this year, but new truck (over 3500kg GVM) arrivals of 332 were only the second-highest figure recorded in 2017.

Year to date, arrivals of new light commercials (under 3500kg GVM) total 8828 units, while new trucks (over 3500kg) totalled 940 units.

Used light commercial vehicles (under 3500kg GVM) entries for March also remain high with 722 units, while the arrival of used trucks (over 3500kg GVM) was strong at 100 units.

Year-to-date used light commercial (under 3500kg GVM) arrivals tally 1897 units for the first quarter, while used trucks (over 3500kg GVM) totalled 272 units.

March 2017 could be the biggest month yet recorded for used car arrivals as 19,579 units crossed New Zealand wharves on their way to used motor vehicle traders.

It is, without a doubt, an indicator that consumer and business confidence remains high, despite the forthcoming general election which historically sees the market soften.

Year-to-date nearly 44,000 used cars arrived in New Zealand in the first quarter.

The number of arriving new cars was also high, with 9,200 units transferring from the car carrying vessels in New Zealand ports and into the OEM vehicle distribution networks.

Year-to-date new car arrivals total 25,808 for the first quarter.
