The Labour Party has attacked the government’s plans to put larger and heavier trucks on the road after One News announced a driver licencing agent was selling licences for cash.

One News believes that Police concerned that a former AA Booking Officer was also selling heavy truck licences for a $500 fee.

“The Government must stop plans to put heavier and bigger vehicles on New Zealand roads following the “heavy truck licences for cash” scandal,” says Labour’s Transport Spokesperson Sue Moroney.

“We discover that there are an unknown number of individuals receiving fraudulent driver’s licences without sitting the correct tests, and this all comes at a time when the Government is encouraging more 50-tonne vehicles on the road with the review of its vehicle dimensions and mass rule,” says Moroney.

“Heavy vehicles are already involved in 18% of road deaths when they make up around 6% of all road travel,” she says.

“The Government must get the larger trucks off our roads now with a focus on those fraudulent drivers with bogus heavy traffic licences that allow them to drive while putting people at risk, says Moroney.
