KiwiRail’s new DM locomotives are one step closer to entering service, with two prototype units recently completing testing across the South Island rail network.

The locomotives, part of a $1.7 billion investment into new rolling stock, arrived late last year and have since been undergoing comprehensive trials.

“Our teams have been working hard testing them across the South Island to ensure they meet our standards and are ready for hauling freight in the coming months,” KiwiRail says.

The locomotives have just completed key testing through the Otira Tunnel and along the Midland Line. Their performance is now being reviewed, with KiwiRail teams preparing to make any necessary adjustments based on the results.

Locomotive engineers have also been training on a dedicated simulator based at KiwiRail’s Middleton Freight Operations facility.

“We are excited to see what’s to come next,” the operator says.

Built by Swiss-based Stadler Rail in Spain, the new DM fleet will replace 65 ageing South Island locomotives that currently average 47 years old. A total of 66 units are scheduled to arrive between now and 2026.

The new locomotives feature modern technology, lower emissions, and greater hauling capacity to support KiwiRail’s growing freight task.

In addition to the DM units, KiwiRail will also receive 24 hybrid battery-diesel shunt locomotives designed for yard work. These will feature a central cab and a maximum axle load of 16 tonnes.
