The upgrade of Kapiti Road – a notorious bottle neck for transport operators heading north out of the capital – is on target for completion by the end of this month.
That is provided bad weather does not hinder progress.
The final few weeks of work got into stride last week as contractors worked at night to pave the eastbound traffic lanes.
The upgrade has involved widening the road to four lanes, creating a shared cycle/pedestrian pathway on the southern side of Kapiti Road, removing power poles and taking power and telecommunication services underground, constructing dedicated right-turn lanes into Milne Drive and Te Roto Drive, and installing traffic signals at the intersections.
Safe ‘hook turn’ areas have been created for cyclists turning right into Te Roto Drive and right into Milne Drive. An education campaign is being planned to explain to cyclists how to complete the hook turns.
