European truck brand Iveco Australia has announced it will build its Stralis rigid and prime mover model in Dandenong, Victoria.

From the fourth quarter of 2017 Iveco Australia will assemble the Stralis 6×4 prime mover and 6×2 rigid trucks in various specifications out of its Melbourne base.

The Dandenong facility which currently already assembles the Stralis AS-L, Powerstar, ACCO and Delta and Metro bus chassis models will receive an upgrade.

The factory will undergo significant re-tooling and software refurbishments to calibrate the AT’s adaptive cruise control and lane departure features, which brings new technology to the facility.

The move will mean shorter wait and delivery times for Australian buyers, and will aid customisation to orders by adding factory-fitted options and local accessories.

IVECO Australia managing director Michael Jonson says the boost to local truck making is par for the course.
“IVECO is one of the only few remaining commercial brands to manufacture here,” he says.

“This latest expansion in Australian-based production demonstrates the company’s commitment to having strong local manufacturing presence.”

Johnson says it’s also going to provide a solid employment option.
“The addition of Stralis AT variants to the local production mix along with other initiatives will ultimately see a modest increase in the facility’s workforce,” he adds.
