Australia’s first bus-based Ambulance which utilises an Iveco bus-chassis was revealed yesterday in Adelaide, South Australia (SA).

South Australian health minister Jack Snelling says the “Ambus” will allow SA Ambulance Service to respond to major emergencies such as car crashes and bush fires with the ability to treat multiple patients at once.

The bus can treat six stretcher patients and six sitting patients. It has room for two clinicians in the patient treatment area, and another paramedic who will drive the vehicle.

SA Ambulance Service’s director  Andy Long says once all testing is complete, the bus will be used for a range of purposes in addition to emergency situations once it becomes operational in April.

“We expect it will be well utilised at large scale events, including next year’s Schoolies Festival,” Long says.

The bus is also expected to transport patients in the move from the old Royal Adelaide Hospital to the new Royal Adelaide Hospital.
