Local passengers and international travellers will be able to access Kaikoura by bus again for the first time since last year’s earthquake.

From January 12, InterCity’s daily bus services between Christchurch and Kaikoura will resume, travelling via the reopened State Highway 1.

Service 8728 will depart Christchurch at 7:00 am, arriving in Kaikoura at 9:40 am. Service 8727 will leave Kaikoura at 3:50 pm and arrive in Christchurch at 6:25 pm.

Buses will also stop at towns and communities along the route, including Cheviot and Amberley.

“We’re delighted to be able to help reconnect Kaikoura with the rest of the South Island,” says InterCity Group coach lines general manager Sam Peate.

“Restoring services to Kaikoura was a priority for us to ensure we can serve the local community and share this part of New Zealand with our international visitors,” he says

Destination Kaikoura general manager Glenn Ormsby says InterCity’s reinstated services will help show visitors that Kaikoura is back on the map for inclusion in South Island itineraries.

“The timetables mean visitors can enjoy Kaikoura’s key attractions including whale and dolphin encounters, and stay the night before returning to Christchurch,” says Ormsby.

InterCity bus services between Kaikoura and Picton remain cancelled due to road conditions.
