While the take-down of the NZTA’s Landata database between August 25 and 26 has the potential to cause problems for transport operators and dealers alike, those that DieselTalk spoke to seemed unfazed.

Operators will not be able to licence a vehicle, buy a road user charges licence, apply to change ownership or exempt a vehicle, register and obtain plates for new or imported vehicles – or access online vehicle registration checking services.

Vehicle traders won’t be able to verify vehicle registration information for the purposes of buying and selling vehicles. Warrant of fitness/certificate of fitness service providers will be unable to enter inspection results into the NZTA’s system.

Ian Hector of CablePrice says: “I’ve heard of no issues with the Landata outage. Everyone seems aware of it, and I’ve warned our people that the system will be shut down. No doubt some people will get caught out, but I don’t see it causing any huge problems.”

A spokesperson for Hino told us: “Our customers who work weekends might have issues if they need RUC, but I think everyone is well prepared.”

John Campbell of SelecTrucks used trucks in Auckland felt the same way: “it might cause a few ripples for people but it’s absolutely no problem for us.”

Landata will be offline for up to 38 hours as more than one billion individual records are migrated (or transferred) from the 17-year-old mainframe system on to a new Windows-based computer platform.

The outage includes time to test the system at the NZTA’s and agents’ offices.

The outage is the last stage of a two-year, $8.2 million project to modernise the NZTA’s driver licence and vehicle databases.

The early stages of the project included updating the computer environment for front line staff, and migrating the ‘driver licence register’ to the new platform in May.
