Ikea partners with NZ Post, Mainfreight for nationwide delivery and pickups

Ikea will make its full range available across New Zealand from the day its Sylvia Park store opens later this year, rolling out nationwide home delivery and a network of 29 pickup points from Kaitaia to Invercargill.

The retailer has named NZ Post and Mainfreight as launch partners. Smaller parcels will move via NZ Post, with flat-pack furniture handled by Mainfreight trucks.

The companies will run electric vans and trucks across Auckland, with the aim of achieving 100% zero emission delivery in the metro area – the first home furnishing retailer in New Zealand to set this ambition.

Ikea says it is also working with its partners to extend zero-emissions delivery across the wider network. Fast-charging at the Sylvia Park store and Ikea’s Māngere warehouse is being supplied and maintained by Jump Charging.

Pickup points, operated by Mainfreight, will offer drive-through collection and dedicated parking in major centres such as Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, as well as regional towns including Kaitaia, Greymouth and Invercargill.

Ikea New Zealand fulfilment manager Jan Vanderstappen says accessibility was central to the launch.

“From the moment we decided to enter the market, we knew that to achieve our vision of creating a better life at home for the many people in Aotearoa, Ikea would have to be truly accessible across the country.

“Not just to those living in Auckland and close to our store… we are ensuring customers can access Ikea home furnishing solutions efficiently and affordably; whether that is taking away their products instantly from the store or via Click and Collect, receiving a delivery to the front door, or collecting an order at a near-by pick up point.”

Mainfreight NZ country manager Carl George says his team is excited to support Ikea in offering 100% zero emission home deliveries in Auckland using a fully electric local fleet, powered by renewables.

“Zero emission deliveries for Ikea will be managed from Mainfreight’s new, Green Star 5 rated Mainfreight 2Home facility in Ōtāhuhu, with solar and DC truck charging.

“We welcome the opportunity to support IKEA’s zero emission delivery ambitions, and we look forward to contributing to its ongoing development,” George says.

NZ Post chief customer officer Bryan Dobson added: “NZ Post is excited to support Ikea with their entry into New Zealand… We know New Zealanders are going to be super excited to see their well-known blue van pull up, with their iconic Ikea purchase safely stowed inside, delivered right into their hands.”

Orders will be available via the Ikea website, app, phone, or in-store. Options include click and collect at Sylvia Park (with 24/7 lockers), pick up point collection at 29 locations, or home delivery to the door or to a specified room. Pricing for delivery and collection services will be confirmed closer to launch; customers will receive tracking updates by email or SMS.

Ikea says establishing the fulfilment network is a key milestone ahead of its Sylvia Park opening date, to be revealed on September 4, 2025.
